We're always working on new ways to help you complete more admin with less effort… and our newest innovation will help take the paper out of your paperwork. With our latest update to FreeAgent Payroll, you can enable electronic notifications - i.e. changes to your employees’ tax codes or student loans - in your HMRC tax account and then manage them within FreeAgent.

A tax coding notice is sent by HMRC to employers when an employee's tax code changes in a tax year. Meanwhile, a student loan notice will be sent when an employee’s student loan repayment status changes. In FreeAgent, we refer to these two kinds of notices as ‘HMRC notices’. (Need a refresher on HMRC notices and when you might receive one? Here’s a quick overview.)

So what’s changed? Previously, you had to wait for letters to turn up from HMRC about any changes to your employees’ tax codes or student loan repayments and then manually reflect those updates in FreeAgent. Now, you can check for changes directly from HMRC in your FreeAgent account, then choose to approve or decline the changes. All done and dusted in a few clicks.

To check for HMRC tax coding and student loan change notices using FreeAgent, first you’ll need to enable electronic notifications in your HMRC business tax account (you’ll only have to do this once). Then, head on over to your FreeAgent account to check for any outstanding notices.
